Do native grasses emerge and establish in areas rehabilitated using vetiver grass?

چکیده

Species-rich grasslands provide important ecosystem services, and in South Africa, approximately 40% of these are degraded. Vetiver grass (from India) is often used during rehabilitation efforts to restore soil function without a thorough understanding the potential negative ecological impacts. Hence, study was initiated investigate vetiver’s impacts grassland rehabilitation. Firstly, field survey conducted using contiguous quadrat method evaluate extent secondary succession rehabilitated sites. Secondly, effect vetiver competition seed sowing on recruitment two native grasses (Eragrostis curvula Megathyrsus maximus) examined pot trials. The results showed no evidence succession, but rather abundance bare ground around vetiver, marked increase species richness with increasing distance from planted vetiver. Subsequently, trial, facilitated emergence both grasses, surface indigenous seeds greater than other methods. However, inhibited seedling establishment, even when root excluded. This suggests that areas unlikely become productive good grazing, because inhibits colonisation by grasses.

Do cortical areas emerge from a protocortex?

The adult mammalian neocortex consists of numerous 'areas' distinguished from one another largely on the basis of distinctions in cytoarchitecture and connections. The developing neocortex, though, lacks many of these area-specific distinctions, and is more uniform across its extent. This less differentiated structure, here termed the 'protocortex' undergoes considerable modification after neur...

Phytoremediation of soils polluted by heavy metals using Vetiver grass and Tall Fescue

Phytoremediation is a biological method to improve soils contaminated with heavy metals. The objective of the present research was to study the capability of Vetiver grass and Tall Fescue in refining and reducing pollution of Cd, Cu and Zn from contaminated soils. The research was implemented in greenhouse during two separate tests (Vetiver grass and Tall Fescue) in a completely randomized desi...

New Benefits of Endophyte- Infected Grasses Emerge

Endophytes can provide enhanced drought tolerance, summer survival, and insect and disease resistance to grasses. Endophytes are fungi belonging to the genus Neotyphodium that live in the leaves and stems of grasses and are carried from plant to plant only through seed. These fungi do not cause any disease in the grasses, but under most circumstances they are beneficial to the growth and surviv...
